Harry Potter 6

Just got this off the net. I'm sure that many of us are looking forward to this one.

J.K. Rowling Completes 6th Potter Novel

brain drain

got this from a friend and i just have to share it...

10 Biggest Brain Damaging Habits

1. No Breakfast

People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

2. Overeating

It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

3. Smoking

It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.

4. High Sugar consumption

Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

5. Air Pollution

The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

6. Sleep Deprivation

Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts

Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

10. Talking Rarely

Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain

staggered work hours?!

Staggered Work Hours - I have been meaning to write about this and today is just about good as any other day. Last week (December 15), the MMDA kicked-off its latest experiment. It ordered government employees to report to work at 7am and go home at 4pm, instead of the regular 8am-5pm working hours. Private offices are encouraged to start at 9am and end at 6pm.The program would run until January 6, 2005.

Why may you ask? According to MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, the staggered working time would reduce traffic during the Christmas season. Hmmm... did chairman Bayani think this through?

Lets see... government employees reporting to work at 7am. hmm sounds good, but when you think of it, an hour or two would be wasted. How can that be? Well, since some businesses are not in operations until 8 or 9 am, there are little things to do. The hours between 7 and 9am, will therefore be spent by a government employee to eat breakfast and do other things no necessarily related to work. Since the common time that private and government offices are open are between 9am and 4pm, that gives us only 6 hours (excluding lunch break) of services or interaction. Is it worth it?

Let us tackle traffic next. Since most of the traffic are concentrated around mall areas, this scheme does not really help uncongest traffic where we need it the most - roads going to and passing through malls such as SM and Robinsons. Since government employees are done by 4pm, most of them go to malls to do their last minute Christmas shopping. Employees getting off at 6pm will also troop to the malls, not only to shop and dine but also to wait for the traffic to lighten. Hmmm, did Bayani really do this to help decongest traffic or to lure shoppers to malls?

Another thing, starting this week, most of the employees (be it private or government) will be taking their 2 weeks off. That alone would reduce traffic. And since the xmas break has started, early morning traffic is better than before.

So, what really was achieved or is being achieved by the lastest MMDA program? Is it really improving the traffic situation this holiday season? For more information and opinion about this program, you could read it here, here and here

Staggered work hours - the intention was good, but was it really thought through?

mirror

I bloghopped and came across this site http://onawhimsy.blogspot.com/... she seems to be mirroring what i am feeling... this is one of her latest entry:

It's been two weeks now and still no sign from you. I sit and wait impatiently occasionally reminding myself that it is just a misunderstanding, but also getting riled up every now and again. I hope that when I do hear from you I will be in the prior state of mind. Because if I am in the latter, I don't know when the next opportunity to get things right will be. It's already been too long. Can't you see? But I won't do anything and I won't say anything until you do. I just won't. But neither will you. What are you thinking? Are you still thinking of me? I barely know you and I miss you already. In the mean time, I wait for something to happen, aware that life is short and time precious, aware that my inhibitions are pointless, aware that you too have your own insecurities that are fueled by how I act toward you. But if only you knew. Talk to me. I'm thinking about you.

Hay naku, ano ba yan? bakit nga ba sa iba madaling mag move on at sa iba hindi? bakit kaya pag may silence ay nagiging paraniod ang tao? I just wish that my prayers will be answered soon... that after a long while, i can sleep soundly knowing that i did no wrong... that i was right in giving him the trust once again.

a bleak holiday season

with tragedies left and right, the increase in electric rates and looming increase in water rates, will the Pinoys have a festive holiday season? Is this still the season to be merry?

perception

There is no such thing as an unbiased or an objective opinon. Our judgement is always clouded by what we see or what we intended to see and retain. We only see what we like to see, hear what we like to hear and retain what we want to retain.

Our perception is shaped by what we hear, read, feel and process. I am guilty of this. We have one way or another asked for advice from family and friends on a particular subject or person. They told us what they feel but in the end we still do what we want to do. We only retain the information and advice that we wanted to hear from them - what we want them to reinforce for us.

Unfortunately, what we retain or percieve is not always the right thing or the best thing for us. There is a blind side to this perception. Out of the positive things that a person has shown us, we tend to retain the negative the most. We do not remember how one person made our lives better or how much love he has shown us, instead we remember the hurt we went trough and the betrayal. We do not notice the hundred act of kindness, instead we notice the bitter exchance of words. This is such a sad reality...

simbang gabi

Today, December 16 is the official start of the Pinoy Christmas season. It starts with the simbang gabi and ends with the feast of the three kings on January 6.

Simbang gabi has been a tradition of Filipino Christians since i could remember. Families and Friends troop to church at wee hours of the morning not only for mass but for puto bumbong, bibingka and get togethers. It is also believed that when one completes the simbang gabi (9 days), his wishes will be granted. Hmmm, i wonder, what are the top 3 "hiling" of the Pinoys?

Anyways, I found this at inq7.net and thought that it might be an interesting read on simbang gabi...

It seems that the origin of simbang gabi is rooted with the masses. According to the inquirer article the simbang gabi is really for farmers and the agricultural sector, a recognition of the agrarian moorings of much of the Philippines.

Who will you take with you to the simbang gabi?

over kill

This reaction from the national government is an over kill:

MALACAÑANG has offered to make Fernando Poe Jr. a national artist and broached the idea of burying him at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The Palace offer is wildly perceived to be attempts at appeasing the angry supporters of the king of Philippine movies.

And it does not stop there... At the House of Representatives and the Senate, allies of the actor are appealing for the Philippine flag to fly at half-staff in his honor.

I mean, we all know that the late FPJ was well loved by the people from all walks of life, but does politicis have to play a role at this time?

the holiday blues

feeling the holiday blues and realizing that i might have placed too much faith on something and someone... made myself vulnerable once again. Ah, the travesty! Why such painful outcome? How come i never learn?

Tuesday, December 14, 2004

another thought

"Da king" is dead, how will da queen (aka PGMA) react?

1. release a press statement saying that she is offering prayers for FPJ, etc.
2. ride on the publicity and milk this for all its worth
3. put the military and the PNP on high alert on the grounds that ERAP and FPJ loyalist might plan to unseat her.
4. ask her lawyers to file a motion to dismiss the election protest on the grounds that the petitioner is dead

real age

I took the real age test today and found out that my real age is 28. I am a year younger than my actual age. If i have more exercise i might just have gotten a lower number. I guess, this can motivate me to eat healthier and exercise more plus i should not stress out on things beyond my control.

My wish for the new year? better health, better love, to be more stable financially and emotionally and to be with my one true love. Who ever you are... magpakita ka na! tawagan mo na ako. hehehe

a random thought

Fernando Poe Jr., the king of Philippine movies who almost unseated President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo passed away early this morning. Poe fell into a coma after a massive stroke Saturday night... This development has left many Filipinos in shock and has left me thinking about the what ifs....

What if he won the elections last May? Then we would have had 3 different Presidents in 2004 - Arroyo, Poe and who ever the Vice President is... If Loren won, then we have Loren by default, but if the Vice President was Noli, we will have him as President by default. It makes you wonder db?

If Poe was President, then it would have been the second time that we lost a President while in Office. President Ramon Magsaysay died in a plane crash while he was still in office. Both men were beloved by the Filipinos.

TANga

... as usual, naging tanga na naman ako. hay naku, kainis! Well, at least i gave it another go.

DA press release

just want to share this news release...

DA to provide corn and palay seeds to farmers in Cagayan

Tuguegarao City - In his recent field visit in Northern Luzon, Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap said his department is ready to assist in the rehabilitation of agricultural farmlands in Cagayan damaged by the successive typhoons but noted that the DA will be needing the help of all the Cagayanons for the rehabilitation effort to succeed.

Yap gave this assurance in a dialogue with the local government executives of Cagayan during his visit, adding that the department is ready to provide seeds to farmers to help them recover their losses.

For corn, the DA and the LGU will be implementing the scheme that will grant P750 subsidy for the cost of seeds per bag of hybrid corn seeds. The subsidy for open pollinated variety of corn seeds shall be P260/bag.

For hybrid palay, an additional subsidy of P325/bag shall be granted over and above the existing regular subsidy of P1,750 per bag of hybrid rice. The balance of P325 per bag will be the cash equity of farmers.

A total of 17,752 hectares and 5,988 hectares of farmlands in the Province of Cagayan planted to corn and palay, respectively were damaged by typhoons that hit the country in the last two months.

The damaged farmlands represents 73 percent of the area planted to corn and 35 percent for palay.

Yap, at the same time, asked the provincial government to come up with projects for possible DA funding. He also encouraged them to tap the assistance of the different government agencies noting the agriculture department alone cannot save agriculture in Cagayan.

The agriculture secretary was accompanied in his visit DA Undersecretary for Operations, Edmund Sana. They were welcomed by Governor Edgar Ramones Lara, the municipall mayors, Regional Executive Director Gumersindo Lasam of DA-RFU 02, members of the Regional Management Committee and other national and local government officials.

For queries, suggestions and recommendations, the public can text the DA by typing DAand send to 2920. ###

FPJ

The whole nation is a buzz with the news that Fernando Poe Jr., the king of Philippine movies and Presidential aspirant, was rushed to the hospital due to a stoke. Like a telenovela befitting the king, every TV and radio station has set-up an hourly bulletin on his condition. How will the drama unfold? How will this end? Only time and God can tell...

a love story

I got this from a friend. Here is something worth sharing:

After 21 years of marriage, I discovered a new way of keeping alive the spark of love. A little while ago I had started going out with another woman. This was really my wife’s idea. “I know that you love her,” she said one day, taking me by surprise.

“But I love YOU,” I protested.

“I know, but you also love her.”

The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.

“What’s wrong, are you well?” she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news. “I thought that it would be pleasant to pass some time with you.” I responded. “Just the two of us.” She thought about it for a moment then said, “I would like that very much.”

That Friday after work, as I drove over to pick her up I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house, I noticed that she too, seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the
dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was radiant as an angel’s.

“I told my friends that I was going out with my son, and they were impressed,” she said, as she got into the car. “They can’t wait to hear about our meeting.”

We went to a restaurant that although not elegant, was rather nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu to her, her eyes could only read large print. Half way through the entrée, I lifted my eyes and saw mom sitting there staring at me. A nostalgic smile was on her lips. “It was I who used to have to read the menu to you when you were small,” she said.

“Then it’s time for you to relax and let me return the favor,” I
responded. During the dinner we had an agreeable onversation, nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each others lives. We talked so much that we missed the movie.
As we arrived at her house later, she said “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.

“How was your dinner date?” asked my wife when I got home. “Very nice. Much more so than I could have imagined,” I answered.

A few days later my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her. Some time later I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt from the same place mother and I had dined.
An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I was almost sure that I couldn’t be there but nevertheless, I paid for two plates – one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant to me. I love you.”

At that moment I understood the importance of saying, in time: “I LOVE YOU” and giving our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than God and your family and friends. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off ‘til “some other time”.

Someone once said “I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I think this is true with your in-laws, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and your friends. Anyone that means something to you – you should spend time with them and let them know how much they mean to you as often as you can.

one of those days

Oh boy, oh boy... it just has to be one of those days where nothing seems to go right. I feel that i am sitting on a time-bomb waiting for the fuse to go off.

Just this morning, i got into an arguement with my boss over small stuff like borders and fonts. I seem to have mood swings... down one moment then angry the next. Plus that BOY is not helping any. Worst he seem to be fuelling the insecurities and doubts that i have.

I do wish this will end soon! Pls let this end soon. I want to get out of this awful mood.

malamig

mukhang malamig na naman ang Holidays... i was really expecting this to be different, just hope i won't be let down.

virgin coconut oil anyone?

This is the new "thing" this year, but what is virgin coconut oil?

Virgin Coconut oil is extracted from fresh mature coconut meat or its derivative by mechanical means, with or without the application of heat. It contains no fat and cholesterol. One of the unique characteristics of virgin coconut oil is that, it is not usually stored in the body as fat, but is converted into energy. That is why many people who have tried our products have reported an increase in their energy level, in addition to unexpected weight loss.

Other health benefits includes: Help you lose weight, or maintain your already good weight; Reduce the risk of heart disease; Lower your cholesterol; Improve conditions in those with diabetes and chronic fatigue; Improve Crohn’s, IBS, and other digestive disorders; Prevent other disease and routine illness with its powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal agents; Increase metabolism and promotes healthy thyroid function; Boost your daily energy and Rejuvenate your skin and prevent wrinkles.

This proudly Pinoy-made product is being exported to Singapore, Japan, Korea, and the US (the biggest market). According to the Philippine Coconut Authority, an estimated 100,000 liters were exported in 2003. This year, shipment is estimated to double.

As not to go the way of the Nata de coco industry (which boomed then collaped), the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) is set to issue an interim set of minimum quality standards for the production / processing of virgin coconut oil to booster world wide acceptance. The parties involved in the process include the Department of Science and Technology, University of the Philippines Los Banos Biotech, Up-Diliman and the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standards (BAFPS) and members of the Virgin Coconut Oil Producers and Traders Association of the Philippines (VCOPTA).

BAFPS Director Gilberto Layese said the standards should be able to conform with the standards set by the Codex Alimentarious Commission (CAC). The CAC is an internationally-recognized food quality standards body of the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization.

The Virgin Coconut Oil is expected to boost the coconut sector which has been experiencing a downward spiral for years. The PCA is redoubling its efforts to strengthen the coconut industry by encouraging new planting to reduce senile trees and the expansion of new products derived from coconut.

I just hope that this new cottage industry will be able to sustain the interest as well as the market. I also hope that quality standards will indeed be met.

hoping...

... that the person i gave my trust will not let me down again. That the relationship will be better than it was before.

... that the much needed reforms be truly implemented, the rules and laws followed and the offenders prosecuted.

... that i will be a better person because of and inspite of the trials and situations that i have been trough this year. That i have learned from what has happened and try to do what is right and what is best.

... that the New Year does indeed bring better tidings and peace, warmth and laughter, health and prosperity, love and contentment.

waiting...

... for the phone to ring, for that one voice to tell me that everything will be ok. A dinner perhaps? A shoulder to cry on or just a person to talk to.

... for some good news, a little pick me upper this season.

... for the knight in shinning amor, a person that i trust and will never let me down again. The person to catch me when i fall.

when will the waiting game end?

a way to de-stress

Feeling a bit stressed lately? Aside from talking to family and friends, and surrounding yourself with things that give you comfort; gazing at familiar faces, even in pictures, may help you feel less stressed.

According to realage.com, the look of a familiar face appears to soothe nerves and dampen the stress response, according to a new study. And finding the familiar face in a photograph produces the same effect. Spend time with friends and family when you're feeling stressed and keep photos on hand for times when they can't be near.

Keeping a picture of your family or love one in your wallet can do wonders. It can help you keep the stress at bay. Having close, loving relationships promotes health. Social ties provide people with coping mechanisms for stress. Unchecked stress levels may contribute to needless aging because stress has a physiological effect on the body that suppresses the immune system and puts certain systems into overdrive.

Research shows that people are often calmed by the presence of loved ones. Talking out your troubles with a close friend or family member can help assuage stress, too. If friends are not near, try keeping a journal or calling friends on the phone whenever you need to release your worries. Other ways to fight stress includes getting regular exercise, practicing some form of relaxation or meditation technique, eating a healthful diet, and spending time with family and friends. Praying also reduces stress.

This sunday, why don't you spend sometime with your family. Cook together, watch a movie or have that out of town trip that you have always wanted. Watching romantic movie scenes not only puts you in a romantic frame of mind, but it also may affect hormone levels in your body. A new study revealed that levels of progesterone, a hormone that promotes bonding and relaxation, were increased in both men and women while watching a romantic flick.

RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

Hurrah for the Filipino sprit

There is nothing like a tragedy or a super typhoon to bring out the bayahihan sprit of the Filipino. For the past few days, there has been an out pouring of support and volunteerism to help out the victims of the recent typhoons. I do pray that this sprit will stay with us longer than a week or two.

To the heros and volunteers, bravo. To our politicians, I hope that more than the photo-ops, you will buckle down to work. To congressman “kurat” of Compostella Valley, you have shown a different face of a public servant – you are a rare breed. I know this is expecting much, but I hope that there will be more pubic servants like you.

sipping hot cocoa on a rainy day

It has been raining steady for the past few days. One way of beating the cold and boredom is to stay in bed sipping hot cocoa and reading a good book. Recently i discovered that cocoa is an antioxidant. According to realage.com:

A surprising winner in the drinkable antioxidants arena is cocoa. Warming up with hot cocoa will deliver an antioxidant punch that neither red wine nor green tea can beat, according to recent research. Cocoa is rich in phenols, compounds that fight heart disease, aging, and cancer. To keep your fat and calorie intake low, drink it in moderation.
It goes on to say that
Many pre-made, instant hot cocoa mixes contain trans fats, an aging kind of fat linked to heart disease. To keep your intake of trans fats low, make your own hot cocoa mix from scratch with unsweetened cocoa powder. You can further reduce fat content by using skim milk or water. However, remember that your sweetened beverage will still be fairly high in calories, so keep your portions small and make adjustments to your diet as necessary to keep your overall calorie count down. Hot chocolate made from cocoa may be better than a serving of milk chocolate because a serving of cocoa has less fat than a standard-size chocolate bar. Chocolate is rich in flavonoids, antioxidant compounds that boost cardiovascular health by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow. Cocoa contains gallic acid and epicatechin, both of which are phenolic flavonoids with potent antioxidant properties. Other good sources of antioxidants are fresh fruits and vegetables.
Wouldn't this make you reach out for that hot cocoa?

my rose

With a single phone call, we can be changed forever. We realize that all is not what it seems and that life can throw as a curve ball when we least expect it.

The present situation calls for reflection, an analysis of what could have possibly gone wrong. What were the factors that lead to the sitution that all surprised us all? How come we didn't see it coming straight at us? Were we too busy with our own lives to pick up the phone or sit down and talk? This is a turning point for us. I hope and pray that this will pass soon and that no one gets hurt or lost again.

Life (and love) indeed is not a bed of roses. But then again it might just be. One can only realize and appreciate the beauty of life and of one's family if one can also learn from the pains and aches.

You appreciate the loveliness of the rose, torn and all. You marvel at its beauty, on how delicate it seems and get inspired by how it protects itself. But we forget that even if its torns are there to protect itself, it is vulnerable to the elements. It needs attention and tender loving care.

To my lovely rose, we will always be here to support, and love you no matter what. In your journey to find yourself, we are praying that you (and the rest of us) find the peace that we are looking for. Forgiving the ones who caused you pain and forgiving yourself is the first step. I pray that we get out of the this intact and stronger than ever. I love you and miss you so much.

here we go again

When ever disaster or tragedy strikes (be it a natural or man made one), the first thing government officials do is point fingers. The second action they do is to create a committee to investigate the cause of the said catastrophe. These knee-jerk reactions can very well be illustrated by the recent scandals and calamities that rocked the Philippines.

First on the list is the corruption in the military. Here much had been said about Gen. Garcia and his unexplained wealth (who were in the loop, where he got the money and how he amassed it), that it lead to congressional investigation, as well as military and civil court cases. I know deep down that after the initial media hype and photo-ops, this issue will again be over taken by events and eventually lead to nowhere. Such is the tragedy that is the Philippine government.

Recently, the issue of Hacienda Luisita was big news. The issue was further aggravated following the death of 7 strikers (or 14 strikers –depending on whose side is reporting). This is considered major news mainly due to the fact that the family (the Cojuancos) that owns the vast hacienda are the Who’s who of Philippine politics (this includes a former president of the republic, congressmen, businessmen and media personalities).

Again, there was a pointing of fingers on who was to blame. The Department of Labor and Employment (who ordered the demolition and called on the military) was blamed by the opposition. The NPA’s as well as the leftist group were blamed by the military for aggravating the strike. And once again, there will be an investigation on who to blame and what caused the violence.

This never-ending cycle of pointing-fingers and committee investigation will once again happen in the wake of typhoon Winnie. The recent typhoon to hit Luzon left at least 348 dead, millions in damaged infrastructure and in agriculture. This typhoon was not the strongest to hit the country, but steady rains caused landslides and flash floods in Quezon, Rizal, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. Illegal loggers are to be blamed for this, how ever, government officials are not far behind. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, local government and even the slash-and burn farmers are at blame too. People with short term concerns are just as guilty as the callous officials.

It is depressing to note that our leaders and the majority of the citizen are still governed by parochial interest.

bahala na

Each country and culture is known for their certain characteristics. We Filipinos have always been known to be God fearing, friendly and with the ability to face problems and situations with a sense of joy and humor (with a touch of flexibility, and creativity). These characteristics are just some of the strengths of the Filipino character which also includes strong family orientation, hard work and the ability to survive.

It is ironic to note that many of the strong points are also the sources of weakness. Our faith in One God and religiosity are sources of strength and courage but they also lead to an external orientation that keeps us passive and dependent on forces outside ourselves. This concept can be best illustrated by the "bahala na" philosophy.

In belief, it is a very positive characteristic. "Bahala na" literally means Bathala na or putting one's faith in God or letting God take care of it. It gives a person hope and optimism to face problems and hardships in life as well as the good times too. (although it is known that people put their faith in God more during times of trials than exceptional times in their lives) It enables us to comprehend and accept reality in the context of God's plan. Thus, tragedy and bad fortune are accepted.

This positive character can be a source of weakness when taken to the extreme. We Filipinos believe in luck and good faith (this can be seen best in Quiapo where faith healers, fortune tellers and the faithful congregate the most). We sometimes forget that one has to work hard in order to achieve things. Prayer and hard work goes together and that is the way it should be. God gave us hands to pray but also to use for work.

the count down begins

"Officially" christmas in the Philippines starts on December 16, which is the start of the simbang gabi. Unofficially, it starts right after all saint's day, when the malls put up the xmas decors and start playing xmas tunes to entice shoppers to buy the presents early. Even the TV networks get into the act and start with their own version of the Christmas countdown during those news programs. Only in the Philippines where you can see news reporting with a touch of commercialism!

Tomorrow is the 1st of December, which means that it's 24 days before Christmas, 31 days before the New Year and only 17 days before the offical start of xmas vacation, parties, traffic, shopping and all the food you can eat.

Your Beauty lies
in Contradiction. Controversial, unpredictable, and
never what anyone expects.
You appearance and your personality are two
opposite things. Even your
appearance sends different signals to different

You are a little bit of
everything all mixed together. You can be watching

mall. You seem to be almost a
different person every time you meet someone, but
at the same time you know
exactly who you are and there is always that one
thing that makes you you. You
enjoy keeping people guessing and people love how
completely unpredictable you
are.

rainy days and monday

It has been raining steadily since Saturday, and try as I will, I can’t seem to shake the feeling that today, will be a lousy day. First of all, who would want to get out of a warm comfy bed and brave the traffic, rain and all the miserable souls who need to be in the office before 8am? Second, braving the rain means making more effort to get dressed so that one will not be completely drenched by the time one gets to the office, and third, wouldn’t it be better to just stay at home with a hot cup of chicken soup or hot chocolate reading a good book? What ever it is, it looks like this Monday will be terrible.

My prediction came true… traffic was bad, everyone in a foul mood, and to top it all, I was late for the first time in months! Things just couldn’t get any better! What will the day bring? Help!

an ode to a companion

To the one person who have to power to make me happy and the power to hurt me the most;
To the one person who can make me smile inspite of all the worries in world, my one-person cheering squad;
To the one person who takes me back and hugs me close inspite of all the trouble I cause;
I say thank you and I love you

pleasant surprise

Just when I thought you have forgotten, you do something that conveys you planned this all along… that you knew about it and was just waiting for the right time to say it.

Just when I am about to thrown in the towel and say “that’s it! I can’t take the *#@* anymore,”, you do something so commonplace that it melts my heart.

With a phone call, you were able to dispel my fears and worries; with a touch you were able to convey a feeling so strong that it dissolves any doubts. Your warm embrace evokes feelings of home and love, of being safe. To be with you, is to be protected and loved.

You are a grown-up with an inner child trapped inside, a person who seems so unaffected and indifferent but whose deepest desire is to be loved deeply and truthfully.

You never cease to amaze me. I am truly thankful to have you in my life.

mirrors of the soul

“The depth of a friendship – how much it means to us… depends, at least in part, upon how many parts of ourselves a friend sees, shares and validates” – Lilian Rubin

Friends are not only there for us during the good times, but real friends stay with us through the bad and rough times of our lives. They are not only essential for coping with our day-to-day frustrations and heartaches or sharing private jokes, they help us go through a crisis, and help us grow as human beings. Friends tell us much of who we are - what we value in life, what we believe in, where we are in our lives and what we deem should be changed. Indeed, they are part of us as we are of them. They are in fact a mirror of who we are.

It is not to say that families don't have a great support system, they do, but one must realize that friends have a support systems uniquely their own.

Relationship among peers is extremely important among teenagers and young adults. They are just some things and issues that one can tell their friends and not their family. A bond among peers is extremely important as we need other people who can relate to what is happening in our life, we need them as models and models whose circumstances are closer to our own. We look at them as guide of who we once were, who we are and who we will become. We look at friends and their experiences and heed their advice, we learn from our mistakes as much as we learn from theirs, we look through experiences to start defining ourselves and how we value ourselves as human beings.

In life, one meets a lot of people... Some mere acquaintances, others friends for life. The degree of friendship one has depends on how much of us we are willing to share with them. Of how much we see in them. While it is sometimes true that opposites attract, it is more probable that people whose degree of similarity in characteristics, likes, belief and values are drawn closer. These pave the way for greater understanding and better bonding. The depth of friendship greatly depends on how much of yourself you are willing to share.

While there are friends what we might loose touch with through time and distance, we must be grateful for the memories that we have, the good and the bad times shared and the lessons we learned from them.

thoughts on population control

Just like the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg... I wonder if poverty contributes to increasing population or increasing population contributes to poverty?

The Philippines has one of the highest birth rates in the world (2.36% annually) as well as one of the highest incidence rates of poverty (34%) in Asia and the world. If the annual growth rate continues at 2.36 percent, then the Philippine population is expected to double in approximately 29 years. This means from 76.5 million in 2000, Philippine population will be 153 million! This year, we are nearing the 90 million threshold.

In the Philippines, population control is such a sensitive topic. The Department of Health (DOH), backed by the President is advocating the natural family planning method, deterring the use of artificial control methods as it will anger the Catholic Church. In fact, the government is vague on the issue of how to control the rising population.

According to the news, the DOH still has 111 million pesos worth of contraceptives stashed in its warehouse. My question is, WHY is it hidden / stashed when health centers, NGO clinics are in such dire need of the supply? WHY can’t the government advocate natural family planning along with artificial methods? It’s ok promoting natural method as long as education / information on this is available and accurate. But the fact remains, people are still in the dark as to what natural method really is and how it works.

I believe that an aggressive information-campaign drive and the active participation of the local government units and other sectors concerned down to the barangay level is the key to addressing population control. Now poverty is another matter.

fantasy

Our country really does live in a fantasy world!

Switch on your TV sets and tune in to any of the two leading networks (2 or 7) during primetime weekdays, and you will find yourself immersed in the fantasy world of "marina" or "mulawin", two of the most popular programs of the networks. I guess the Filipino people are so feed up with the daily problems besetting the country - high cost of living, the shrinking purchasing power of the peso, mass lay-offs, etc- that they are in dire need of a fantasy world. For thirty minutes or so, people are tuning in and getting lost in these world of mermaids and winged creatures. They are wishing, that they too, would overcome problems and hardships with the help of magic and that true love does indeed conquer all.

Now the government seems to be bent on conjuring up the biggest illusion of them all!

In September, the President announced that the country is in deep financial crisis... but right after she said that all levels of government should conduct austerity measures, she flew to China for an offical trip. This alone will not get the ire of the people, but she brought the WHOLE family along... i don't just mean her husband and children, the grandchildren (ages 1 and below), daugthers-in-law and nanny went along too! Now how's that for austerity measures!

There IS NO austerity program in the government... the lower level employees feel it (no bonus, no overtime pay, no salary increase) but for top level management, it's, for lack of a better term, monkey business as usual.

I mean, if there truly is an austerity program in place, why should the government transfer the office of the Department of Agrarian Reform to Iloilo, the Department of Agriculture to Davao, the Department of Tourism to Cebu? These transfer will entail COST! According to reports DAR will spend P400 million to move with the total expenses hitting Php 1 billion! Now remember, this is just ONE department... it does not even take into account the transport / airfare the Heads of the Department need just to attend the weekly cabinet meeting in Manila, nor does it take into account the logistics involved in communicating and transacting business between agencies and department. Instead of doing this, WHY can't the government improve rural and regional services?

Now, barely three months after declaring that the country is in financial crisis, the President announed that the country has made a fiscal turn-around. In an article in the Philippine star the President insisted that the country is definitely out of the critical stage of the fiscal crisis. She attributed this to the people’s unified response to her calls to address the crisis at the soonest possible time. Unless a miracle happend while we were all asleep or going-on with our daily routine, i imagine that what she said is all a lie. I mean, hello! When did this happen? Is the purchasing power of the pesos higher or lower than it was three months ago?

Another illusion is the food coupons as solutions to hunger and poverty. Right after the SWS released its survey results that 15% of the population is going hungry, the government had this crazy knee-jerk reaction of giving out food coupons to address this problem. This would mean that government is going to spend about P5 billion - yup billion- a month for this program.

Yesterday (November 8), the government kicked off its supplemental feeding program by distributing 1-kilo of fortified rice to around 1,700 Grades 1 and 2 students at the Cainta Elementary School in Rizal. Under the "Food for School" program, a total of 49,130 Grades 1 and 2 students from poor families in selected schools will be taking home 1-kilo of rice daily until the end of the school year on March 2005. The rice subsidy is part of the government's response to the SWS survey that showed more filipinos are going hungry. Question is, what happen's after the five month is up? This temporary remedy does not address the main issue!

For a country that is in deep financial crisis, this short term solution could cause more dissatisfaction and make the program open to corruption. Where should the government get the funding for this ambitious project? Isn't it cutting down on its expenditures? and why, why hasn't the President giving up a significant sum of her discretionary funds? Instead of setting an example on austerity, she is the first one to go against it? Leading by example, she is not.

This is what is wrong with our country, instead of having medium to long term solutions to a problem, we tend to go for short term solution. Instead of addressing WHY the problem came about, the government tends to give dole-outs.

Instead of making the country appealing to investors to generate more jobs, the government and the politicians are busy "investigating" issues that they don't even get to resolve. They are more concerned with their "image" and "PR" than addressing the huge problems of the country.

Let us address population control, and take a stand, instead of fearing what the church will say. Let us address decongesting the metropolis and giving farmers and fisher-folks better options, technologies and subsidies to address not only food security but more importantly addressing rural poverty and hunger.

Instead of "papogi" pronouncements, and spinning webs of lies, why can't the government just shape up and do its job? Just shape up and do its job?

positive outlook

I may be getting old(er) but i don't look my age. :)

An easy smile and a positive oulook can not only uplift the spirit, it does wonders for your appearance too.

According to realage.com Positive thinking may help older people remain physically active and strong, whereas a negative mental attitude may quickly lead to cognitive deterioration, a new study concluded. To see the glass as half full, spend time contemplating the good things in your life and try to avoid repeatedly mulling over negative experiences. It's RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

Remember, it takes more facial muscles to frown than to smile. In fact, a scowl can contribute to more facial lines and wrinkles. A positive attitude, not only makes you prettier, it makes you younger too.

In fact the realage tip goes on to say: Positive thinking appears to boost health by enhancing immune system function. A positive disposition also may help people avoid mental conditions that have been associated with poor health choices, such as depression and anxiety. If you find yourself struggling to remain positive, consider writing your worries down and then promising to forget about them for the rest of the day. Return to your list when you have time to work on positive solutions to your problems. Also, finding enjoyable ways to pass your free time could give you less time to fret and more positive experiences to remember later on.

Now, wouldn't that make you want to start your day with a smile?

another one bites the dust

This weekend I received news that a friend decided to bid single-hood goodbye and say hello to wedded bliss. Yup, just when I thought I could not get enough of weddings, I learned that a friend is getting married soon – and I mean real soon!

What’s with 2004 and the number 29 that makes people in my age group (anyone with student number ’92 and above?) go crazy and take the plunge? Is it the inevitable wrinkles that we know will be upon us soon? Is it realizing that we are past our prime, that our metabolism is getting slower and we just can’t eat the same food as before without getting a bit plump? YES, we are getting older, but does it also mean that we should necessarily settle down?

Another reality check that indeed I am getting older (albeit not necessarily wiser) is the fact that two of my friends recently gave birth to super cute baby boys. While I admire their commitment and strength (hey, it’s not easy bringing a child into this world – especially in this economic times), I can not see myself having one soon.

Babies and marriage is a BIG responsibility. You think beyond yourself, you are responsible not only for yourself but for the well-being of those around you. As of now, all I can think of is me, myself and I – my earnings are just enough for me to live by, I can’t for the life of me, imagine how I can manage having a family with a measly income. But, maybe, when I do get to have a family, my priorities will change. As of now, my priorities are having enough moohlah to pay my monthly celphone, credit card and house dues.

I admire my friends for starting a family. I know that age is a factor (hey our biological clock is ticking!) but maturity, love, commitment and respect are factors too. Congrats and best wishes guys! All the best.

Hmmm, as of last count, there has been 5 weddings, and 2 new babies. What will next year’s statistics be? Who will succumb to the BIG COMMITMENT?

Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over it, if that trust is ever broken.

21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, slow and steady; It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and then, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.

UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions; who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you're boring. Only those who know you well know that you aren't.

I don't know if this test is for real or not; if its realiable, but it was fun answering the questions.

brain teasers

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of the muscles.

As we grow older, it's important that we keep mentally alert. The saying; "If you don't use it, you will lose it," also applies to the brain, so.....

Below is a very private way to gauge your loss or non-loss of intelligence. Take the following test and determine if you are losing it or are still "with it."OK, relax, clear your mind and.... Begin.

1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: "bread." If you said "toast," then give up now and go do something else. Try not to hurt yourself. If you said, "bread," go to Question 2.

2. Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk." What do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk," please do not attempt the next question. Your brain is obviously over stressed and may even overheat. It may be that you need to content yourself with reading something more appropriate, such as Children's World." If you said "water," proceed to Question 3.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks, and a blue house is made from blue bricks, and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a green house made from?

Answer: Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said, "green bricks," what the devil are you still doing reading these questions????? If you said "glass," then go on to Question 4.

4. Twenty years ago, a plane was flying at 20,000 feet over Germany. If you recall, Germany at the time was politically divided into West Germany and East Germany. Anyway, during the flight, TWO of the engines failed. The pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine is also failing, decides on a crash landing procedure. Unfortunately the third engine fails before he has time to attempt an emergency landing, and the plane crashes smack in the middle of "no man's land" between East Germany and West Germany. Where would you bury the survivors? . .. in East Germany or West Germany or in "no man's land"?

Answer: You don't, of course, bury survivors. If you said ANYTHING else, you are a real dunce and you must NEVER try to rescue anyone from a plane crash. Your efforts would not be appreciated. If you said, "Don't bury the survivors," proceed to the next question.

5. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60 of a degree every minute how many degrees will the hour hand move in one hour?

Answer: One degree. If you said, "360 degrees" or anything other than "one degree," you are to be congratulated on getting this far, but you are obviously out of your league. Turn in your pencil, and exit the room.
Everyone else proceed to the final question.

6. Without using a calculator-You are driving a bus from London to Milford Haven in Wales. In London, 17 people get on the bus. In Reading, six people get off the bus, and nine people get on. In Swindon, two people get off and four get on. In Cardiff, 11 people get off and 16 people get on. In Swansea, three people get off and five people get on. In Carmathen, six people get off and three get on. You then arrive at Milford Haven. What was the name of the bus driver?

Answer: Oh, for crying out loud! Don't you remember? It was YOU!!

Now, which questions were you able to answer correctly? :)

state unviersity held hostage

The head might elicit a response that the state university (University of the Philippines) was held hostage by some terrorist group… this is not the case. The fate of UP and its budget for 2005 is now in the hands of the senate, in particular, it hinges on whether or not Senator Miriam Santiago goes on with her threat to block the passage of the UP charter bill. She has blamed UP officials (especially the UP law admission committee) for the suicide of her son last year.

To quote from the inquirer article:

THE FATE of a proposed new charter for the University of the Philippines now hinges on whether the state university's officials will bow to the will of one senator.

Administration Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago has demanded that the UP surrender the names and addresses of the members of the admissions committee that denied entry to her son into the UP College of Law.

This was one of the conditions that Santiago gave for withdrawing the motion she submitted the other day asking the Senate to suspend floor deliberations on the proposed UP charter of 2004.

Santiago's son, Alexander Robert, committed suicide almost exactly a year ago, which the senator has blamed on the "UP
College of Law admission committee for school year 2003.”

In a privilege speech yesterday, Santiago "[requested] strongly" that the UP divulge, before Nov. 15, the membership of the committee whom she accused of being "directly responsible for the suicide of my son Alexander” and how they came to the decision to reject her son’s application

Can you believe that? Only in the Philippines can a senator hold a University hostage for personal reasons. If the University bows to the will of a "mad woman", it will set a preceedent that will eventually snowball. It seems that in this country, it doesn't really matter that the State University seems to be going down the drain due to budget cuts, what matters most is that the good senator gets her revenge.

unexpected

Just when you are about to throw in the towel and give up, the unexpected happens. I was just about to call it a day when out of the blue my phone beeps and I got a text from someone I haven't heard from in quite a while. "How are you?" the text goes..."I hope that everything is ok, do you have time for dinner tonight?"

Since I have no plans for the night I accepted the invite and made plans to meet at my friend's house. Dinner was great, the conversation even better.

This got me thinking, how come, even if you haven't seen each other for weeks on end, somehow, if you truly care and love one another, you will always have time to reconnect?

journey

In this journey that we call life, is it ok to go with the flow or be like a salmon and fight your way upstream?

When I read the book 'the alchemist', I was fascinated with the search for one's personal legend. I wonder, in this lifetime, will I ever find my personal legend? If so, when will it be? Will it hit me between the eye or was it under my nose all along?

Ever since I was small, I always dreamt that I would be a manager in a multi-national company making big decisions or owning a big business (I have dreamt of owning a bookstore café since I was in high school) I was an entrepreneur when I was small. In fact, I remember renting out my pocket books and selling shirts and other items for extra cash. It's different when you have your own money to spare. Somehow along the way, my entrepreneurial sprit and my dream got side tracked when I entered collage and eventually started working. Things didn’t go as planned… But like they say, life is what happens, when you are busy making plans and dreaming.

I am now past a quarter of a century (more likely close to 3 decades), but it seems that I am no way closer to my dreams. I have been so content with my comfort zone for the past years that I wasn't really welcoming the change that seemed to be apparent. I had the chance to change careers earlier this year, but I chose to remain because I felt that the offer is not for me. But as weeks turned to months, I begin to wonder, did I made the right choice? I am looking into the possibility of changing careers, hope that the only 2 jobs / vacancies that I applied to calls soon.

My life is in transition right now, not only in terms of my career but in much more personal ways. They say that the only sure thing in life is death, taxes and changes. How we deal with them is a different matter. At this point, I am welcoming change, heck; I am even praying that changes happen soon. I feel that I am in a rut, not really using / tapping into my full potentials. I pray that positive changes happen soon, in life, in my career and in love.

January isn’t that far away, the New Year might be the best time for change… meanwhile, let me go over the classifieds. :)

true love

When will the waiting for the ONE be done?

Since we were little, our consciousness was filled with the notion of the princess meeting her prince charming, of knights rescuing the damsel in distress and of course of “living happily ever after”. These fairy tales are further reinforced as we get older by books, romance novels, TV shows and movies – hey, even action pictures had to spin the love angle too, the hero ALWAYS gets the girl in the end. We are continuously bombarded by this never-ending paradigm that we MUST find the love of our lives, get married and eventually settle down. But what if this NEVER happens? Will it make single life more difficult than married life? In a single’s pursuit to happiness, should it always include love and marriage?

Just this Friday, I received an invitation to a friend’s wedding, in fact this is the third or fourth wedding invitation that I got this year… hey, what’s happening? Why is everyone in a rush to get married? Is it age? Body clock? Or really finding one’s true love?

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m not bitter or anything like that, I just amazed at the number of my single friends that are getting married this year – a record number! I am extending my best wishes to them for finding their true love, for knowing deep in their hearts that they have found the right mate and would be with that one person for the rest of their lives. After saying “I do”, their lives will be forever changed. There will be no more spontaneous nights out with girl friends nor a impulse vacation or purchase, they will always have to confer with their “other-half” on making those decisions. They will cease to think in the pronoun “I” and start thinking as “we”, for they are not just responsible for themselves but also for the feelings and life of their mate. Boy, this truly is a BIG and LIFE ALTERING decision.

I would like to extend my best wishes to my friends who are brave enough to tie the knot and bid single life goodbye. I would like to say to them, “congrats!” on “finding the ONE” and may you live happily ever after!

For us single, I post this question: “when will our waiting be done?” Hmmm, better yet, while waiting for the one, let’s seize the day and live it to the fullest! It’s our life, our choice.

chocolates are good for the heart!

I am NOT a doctor nor do i claim to be an expert on nutrition, but i would like to share with you what i found out regarding my favorite sweet - dark chocolate. I love the stuff! ... the darker, the better... i don't care much for milk or white chocolates but hand me a nice dark chocolate (esp. with nuts - yum yum) i will be your friend for life! :)

According to realage.com eating a small piece of dark chocolate can be good for the heart. Quoted below is one of its tip on reducing the risk of heart disease:

Getting a daily helping of chocolate may be one of the sweetest ways to help your heart.

Research shows that eating foods that are rich in catechin antioxidants, such as dark chocolate, may lower your risk of ischemic heart disease. To keep saturated fat intake low, however, limit yourself to one piece of dark chocolate per day and supplement with other catechin-rich foods that are
low in fat, such as apples and tea.

RealAge Benefit: Getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements can make your RealAge 6 years younger.

Is this one good reason to eat chocolates? To know more about looking, feeling and living younger, pls log on to realage.com.

elections

it seems that election fever is upon us the whole year...

In May, the Philppines had its Presidential election, where until the very end, it was too close to call (on who would win). The GMA camp was churning out one poll after another reflecting her victory, while the FPJ camp was also coming out with its own version of the polls. Naturally, as what happens in the Philippines, the incumbent always wins. They have the power, the machinery, the money and the people to cheat and eventually win. As expected, the FPJ camp cried foul for no one in this lovely country loses... they are always cheated. Election protest is now pending with the electoral tribunal.

A number of countries also had their own national elections... Indonesia, Afganistan, the UK, Australia, etc... but no other country is more watched and anticipated than that of the Presidential elections of the United States. Today, November 2 is D day... the day where Americans decide if they want a bully or a "flip-flop" for a leader.

For the Filipinos, will it matter who wins?

life and death

The past weekend was a testimonial to life and love…

The first of November is traditionally the day when all roads lead to the cemetery, for families to come together to pray and reflect on the lives of those who passed away. The trek to the cemetery is no easy task… one has to brave the traffic, the endless stream of people just to get to the destination and pay respect to the departed love-one. Just getting to there is an indication of how Filipinos value family and how they show that even in death, love is indeed eternal. For it knows no bounds, as long as a person is remembered, he is loved…as long as he is loved, he is remembered.

The day is also a testimonial to life. It is a day where families get together to share and reflect on the lives of those who passed on. It is a day where families remember the dead and celebrate the continuity of life. In fact, cemeteries during these times present a fiesta atmosphere, where families share a picnic and stay the whole day or even the night in the cemetery. They bring food, drinks, and sometimes games (cards, board games, etc), the day has become one big fiesta.

In fact, this tradition of visiting the dead on November 1 and 2 is similar to the Mexican tradition / festivity “Dia de los Muertos” , which literally means “the day of the dead.” In fact, the two are so similar in nature that Mexicans might just be Filipinos who just happens to be at the other side of the world. I do think this is also influenced by the Spanish conquistadors and priest.

To quote Ricardo J Salvador on “what do Mexicans celebrate on the ‘day of the dead’?” where in he traced this festivity to Mesoamerican native tradition, he says:

The original celebration can be traced to many Mesoamerican native traditions, such as the festivities held during the Aztec month of Miccailhuitontli, ritually presided by the "Lady of the dead" (Mictecacihuatl), and dedicated to children and the dead. In the Aztec calendar, this ritual fell roughly at the end of the Gregorian month of July and the beginning of August, but in the postconquest era it was moved by Spanish priests so that it coincided with the Christian holiday of All Hallows Eve (in Spanish: "Día de Todos Santos.") This was a vain effort to transform the observance from a profane to a Christian celebration. The result is that Mexicans now celebrate the day of the dead during the first two days of November, rather than at the beginning of summer. But remember the dead they still do, and the modern festivity is characterized by the traditional Mexican blend of ancient aboriginal and introduced Christian features.

He goes on to state that:
Generalizing broadly, the holiday's activities consist of families (1) welcoming their dead back into their homes, and (2) visiting the graves of their close kin. At the cemetery, family members engage in sprucing up the gravesite, decorating it with flowers, setting out and enjoying a picnic, and interacting socially with other family and community members who gather there. In both cases, celebrants believe that the souls of the dead return and are all around them. Families remember the departed by telling stories about them. The meals prepared for these picnics are sumptuous, usually featuring meat dishes in spicy sauces, chocolate beverages, cookies, sugary confections in a variety of animal or skull shapes, and a special egg-batter bread ("pan de muerto," or bread of the dead). Gravesites and family altars are profusely decorated with flowers (primarily large, bright flowers such as marigolds and chrysanthemums), and adorned with religious amulets and with offerings of food, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. Because of this warm social environment, the colorful setting, and the abundance of food, drink and good company, this commemoration of the dead has pleasant overtones for the observers, in spite of the open fatalism exhibited by all participants, whose festive interaction with both the living and the dead in an important social ritual is a way of recognizing the cycle of life and death that is human existence.
I find this information fascinating as it is also what is seen during November 1 (All Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls Day) in the Philippines. The above mentioned Mexican traditions are very much alive in my country. People still trek to the cemeteries, offer prayer, have a picnic and celebrate life and love no matter how hard it takes to get to there, no matter how hard life has become. All Saint’s Day and All Souls Day has been, is and will forever be the day where Filipinos remember those who came before them and will be meeting in the end.
